These short form stories are fun to write...so the spell continues. And, after all, we do know cats.

Reading this, the title of one of my favorite books of the past five or so years came to mind: "Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?" The subtitle provides context: "Big Questions From Tiny Mortals About Death."

The answer is: of course they will (might have to be dead first) but meanwhile they will steal your breath (or so they say).

Having had two black cats, I'm convinced they're Zen masters in animal form. My current cat taught the other neighborhood cat to patrol the territory in exactly the same way, stopping in the same spots to check things out. Uncanny.

He does a bunch of humanesque things, too bizarre to mention here without me coming across as a crazy cat lady.

Best of all, he has white markings at his throat and covering his lower belly like a speedo. He's what ZZ Top might consider a Sharp Dressed Man. Your first 80s song! -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wRHBLwpASw

Btw, I know the video is naff -- very 80s!

Was that 80's? Time warp. ZZ Top: three MIT grads trying to figure out what to do for a living buy some instruments and work it out. Three chords, bass and drums, lots of distortion and a penchant for showmanship - a winning formula. Got dragged into a show with ZZ Top and Vince Gill (all things Daisy Duke) didn't want to go, but turns out Vince Gill a hell of a guitarist, great show. Lead guitarist for ZZ Top has encyclopedic recall in musicology. Bass player gone - end of an era. Cats, check this out: https://open.substack.com/pub/daviddrayer/p/works-913?r=28bk2b&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Lucky you getting to see ZZ Top. Envious. I have one of their posters on my wall and it's quite humorous, as are their videos. They attribute their longevity as a band to having separate tour buses. Smart dudes.

Re the other post, really enjoyed listening to you play and sing your own composition!!! How long have you been playing and how did you learn?

I'm thinking of getting an inexpensive guitar and slowly learning. Tried at age 13 and had a terrible teacher, so gave up. Want to try again. Any advice welcome.

Been playing instruments as long as I can remember, got my first real guitar when I was able to buy one myself (teens). Self-taught. The sound is what will keep you trying, not to be found in inexpensive guitars. Recommend a used quality instrument and let your ear choose (not the salesman). If you have a trained luthier near you, that would be golden, if not, we’ll see to it you get something. Have same luthier and his children over 40 years.

The world of acoustical instruments is a strange and unusual one, love talking about it.

I had to look up luthier. Cool to think about going to the source. Will have to explore if there are any around here. Appreciate your advice.

Before I supply your next 80s hit, do you mind if I ask if you are also an author? I did a wee search on you to make sure I'm not interacting this much with someone I shouldn't be (lots of nuts online!), and wonder if perchance you have been writing books? (I have started reading one available to kindle subscribers, intrigued by the subject.) If not, there is a dude out there with your name doing so.

There is in fact a David Drayer who is an accomplished author, but I am not him and he is not me, and I can prove it. Substack is copyright protected, so there is no conflict of interest. My work is original and protected, same as yours, same as his. Yes, I'm a lunatic, but a safe one. Joel Salatin is the lunatic farmer, good company to be in. Words only have the power we give them. But you're right to be suspicious. The difference between me and the other David Drayer - he gets paid.

Drayer is my adopted name, heretically I'm a Pierce. So, Ellen, who, or what are you?
