I'm quite happy with the audience Jennifer, I'm just a little baffled by the lack of engagement. It's a common problem and comes with the territory - takes a thick skin.
Meanwhile your engagement plays a vital role in all ways. A gem.
Are you posting all your weekly posts to Notes? That's seems to be the only way to get an audience. Substack immediately gives you that option as soon as you post, so it's very easy to do. That's how I'm getting readers.
In terms of 'active' readers, speaking from my own experience, most people do not 'like' or comment -- even people who are my friends and family. I suspect that, now that they know everything online is being tracked, they are reading but not willing to commit to liking something for fear it will go on their 'file.' I can't blame them.
The people who do comment, for me, tend to be people who are substack authors and have nothing to lose because they are already voicing their opinions regularly anyway.
I value your music and your writing - you have insight and wit - and look forward to your posts. And love to see pics of Milo as well.
All true. All of my effort here is purely self-gratifying (it's fun). I threw in a classic call to action rather than a survey or other means of gaining feedback; one reason is because I play the mother hen guarding my flock, and don't want my contributors to feel unrecognized; the other is because of a family gathering and farm work taking all my time as of late.
There was a meeting of musical minds over the weekend, and it was agreed to continue the open mic, so the music goes on. We'll be back with new contributors, upgraded sound production and more.
S&UP and The Spell of Ai run always just below the surface, the story is about the story like the music is about the music.
At my level Substack is a poor business model, so this isn't going to earn even a modest living and is in fact pay for play (a thing musicians are familiar with). There is another series incubating which will rely on sources outside of Substack to generate revenue.
It's a poor business model for me too! If you find a better revenue source and care to share it, please do let me know.
But I have just discovered the power of Notes and will promote your upcoming posts with open mic and pithy musical observations. Least I can do to repay the enjoyment.
Thanks for your generous offer. Regarding the upcoming project, it is a very large and ambitious one, so be careful what you ask for. If it succeeds it will be by a long line of mistakes and endless effort, but it will leave some people with a very comfortable retirement.
Directly related to current administrative policies reforming regs, tax reforms, economic and domestic policies and specifically technologies. A tough row to hoe but there will never be a better time than this.
If predictions are right (and I think they are) we are on track for a period of great prosperity with very real possibilities. So stay tuned.
Again sorry about the lack of audience but I looked forward to your music and I love reading your unusual encounters
